Exam Practice
Media Task 2
Are the music magazines aimed at men?
I agree that most music magazines that are released monthly are mainly targeting the male audience. For example on the cover of a particular Kerrang issue, the cover is of a large image of a man in a mask and the title ‘Slipknot’ most of the colours on the covers are grey’s and blacks. These are very dull colours therefore will not attract the female audience because they usually are attracted to magazines with the colours of reds, pinks or blues, mostly bright and eye catching colours with an image on the front that is not too revealing or ‘in your face’ like this particular cover. However another cover I have looked at is one of NME’s front covers, the cover is a large image of a young boy who has just become a big hit in the music industry, the text on the front cover is a large title of ‘Jake Bugg’ and then has smaller text saying that he is 18 years old. My opinion of the front cover is that the image and the detail that he is 18 years old is targeted at females around the age of 16-20 that could be interested in Jake Bugg and therefore the whole magazine of this issue will be targeted towards women aswell. Both of these magazines, Kerrang and NME are not particularly aimed at any type of audience like ‘Top of the Pops’ which is usually aimed at women, but these magazines are very popular magazines aimed at both female and male. However some issues of the magazines can be aimed at different types of audiences each month it is released. The readership profile of the magazine NME is 65% male and 35% female both at the age of around 23, this concludes that this particular magazine is targeted mostly at males.
Take a look at one example of an NME article.
